Report:
Chingford got back to winning ways in a keenly fought contest where Leytonstone’s performance and three new signings defied their current league position.
An even first 15 minutes saw both teams attacking but being unable to find an end product, but both teams were still getting warmed up when a kung-fu style tackle from McPherson seem to spark the game. Although it was Lakeside that shocked Chingford by taking the lead with a goal around the 20 minute mark. As with most times when Chingford concede, they become more dangerous at the other end with Athletic having various opportunities but being unable to convert. Around the 35 minute mark, the returning Kierans continued a run into Leytonstone box where the keeper made a good save, although the ball bounced out to Reeves on the 6 yard box who toe poked the ball home.
Chingford were looking threatening and were creating chances in the lead up to half time; then a ball was played in the air towards the edge of Leytonstone’s box, with the Leytonstone defence failing to respond it was left to their goalkeeper to sprint out and challenge Reeves in the air for the ball. The resulting collision left both Reeves and the 6ft 4” goal keeper on the deck, however Reeves managed to get up and carry on which was a brave decision as he was diagnosed with 3 broken ribs shortly after the game! Half time score 1-1.
The second half started much the same as the first but with Chingford showing some excellent passing and Leytonstone looking well organised it was going to take a moment of magic to get the next goal. With around 25 minutes to go Chingford won a corner, the ball proceeded to fall at the feet of the impressive James Goodbun who rifled a diagonal shot from the corner of the 6 yard box into the opposing corner. This sparked great scenes of celebrations with one of Chingford’s unsung heroes getting on the score-sheet, a player whom with a bit more confidence can become the best left back in the league.
Although, all Chingford’s joy was shortly lived with Leytonstone equalising with around 8 minutes left on the clock. Chingford’s new goalkeeper Langlands whom pulled off some excellent saves was unfortunately struck down with cramp just as he made a good save to deny Leytonstone a goal. The ball however, came straight back to the Leytonstone forward who finished from close range with Langlands lying injured on the floor.
With such little time left on the clock the game became an edgy affair with Leytonstone trying to hold on for a point and Chingford wanting all 3 to challenge for a top 3 finish. A moment of magic then settled this game with the man with concussion and three broken ribs, Reeves, picking the ball up around 30 yards from goal took on three Leytonstone defenders and slotted the ball home for a last minute victory for Chingford.
This weeks man of the match goes to James Goodbun, he was strong in his tackles, accurate with his passing, his positioning was superb and he scored a goal. What more could you want from a left back! Well done Bunaldo, but also well done to Jim Reeves for carrying on with such a terrible injury and scoring the winner!
A special thanks also to the ref whom refereed the game in an excellent manor, by talking and respecting the players from both sides.
